Fishing through a lens: Using underwater cameras to detect freshwater fishes – Registration
Dr. Rowshyra Castañeda, Aquatic Research Biologist, Fisheries and Oceans Canada
Thursday, February 15th at 3pm ET / 12pm PT

Local fish communities can be great indicators of water quality and ecosystem health. However, conventional fishing methods, such as netting or trapping, require training and permitting, making it difficult to rapidly assess the fish community in a local water body. Physical handling of fishes is necessary for these methods, which can cause undue harm and stress to the fishes. Underwater cameras are an emerging tool in fresh water to efficiently detect fishes without such constraints or consequences. Learn about the research behind the use of underwater cameras in freshwater systems and describe how to use this method in local water bodies.

Hi all!

Last Friday, LEPA along with multiple volunteers and the County of Barrhead built and installed the new public dock out at Klondike Park. This is a public dock for all to use! LEPA would like to extend a very special thank you to our gracious donors and all the hard working volunteers. Our donors who provided the means for our new dock include: Alberta Conservation Association (ACA), Pembina Co-op Home Building Store, Heather Ladan, Tom and Terry Mumby, and Ron Pacholok. Pictures of the new dock can be found in our gallery page.

Hi LEPA members,
We want to send out a huge THANK YOU to everyone who came and participated in our 2nd Annual LEPA Fishing Derby! We could not have asked for a better turn out! We had to push the event off Family Day weekend due to the cold weather and we had to do the event a bit different due to COVID, but we think it went extremely well. I think our volunteers did an AMAZING job! Thank you to all the volunteers who set up, helped with registration and the raffle, and helped keep everything organized. We could not have had such a successful event without all of your support.  Lastly, thank you to our fantastic sponsors! We were so excited to see how many amazing items were donated! A full list of our sponsors can be found here

We raised over $4,500 and had over 200 registered anglers!! We cannot wait to put more of our initiatives into action this year and it could not have happened without all of you. So far for 2021, LEPA is looking into installing a new dock in Klondike Park Bay for all to use and we will be completing further lake water sampling to assess the water quality of Lac La Nonne.

Please keep an eye out for our next events! We unfortunately have decided to cancel our sled rally this year due to lack of snow and COVID challenges. Our next event is our Annual General Meeting, occurring May 8th.  Please check out our calendar for all upcoming events!

Thank you again and look forward to seeing you all at our next event!

Ice Shelter Regulation Change:

“To protect the health of Alberta’s waterbodies, encourage stewardship and promote conservation, identification requirements for ice shelters (huts) have been added to the provincial regulations. Anyone leaving an ice fishing shelter on ice for longer than 24 hours must label it in contrasting colour with text 2.5 cm or taller with the following information: Your Wildlife Identification Number (WIN), or Your Name and Telephone Number. You must also remove the shelter: On or before March 15 if you are within Fisheries Management Area PP1, or On or before March 31 on any waterbody within Fisheries Management Areas PP2, ES1-ES4, NB1-NB4.

If break up is going to occur earlier, a fishery officer may direct owners to remove ice huts immediately. If ice huts are not removed before ice break up, debris can enter the water putting both people and our fish populations at risk. Do your part to maintain the health of Alberta’s lakes, providing clean, safe places for our fish populations to thrive.”

For more information please refer to My Wild Alberta and the Alberta Guide to Sportfishing Regulations.

Happy Holidays LEPA Members!

We hope you all had a safe and happy holiday season, even with these harder times. We know 2020 has looked a bit different, but LEPA was still able to host a number of fun events including LEPA’s first Fishing Derby, our annual Boat Regatta, and LEPA’s first Boat Rally! We hope you all enjoyed the events and are looking forward to see what LEPA has planned for 2021.

With that said, we do need your help! LEPA is fully run by volunteers and all these fun events wouldn’t be possible without our great team. We are ALWAYS looking for volunteers and we need your help more than ever starting in 2021. If you would like to volunteer for a great community, please send us a message through our website or talk to your local board member. Check out our poster!

LEPA is wishing you all the best in the last few days of 2020 and a Happy New Year going into 2021!

See you out on the lake!

Hello LEPA members,

Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy a safe social distancing time on the lake for the annual Regatta. The weather was beautiful and we had over 30 watercraft out decorate up in their favourite team colours! The water was sure flying around helping us stay cool. Please check out our gallery for a quick snap shot of the fun. We are already looking forward to next year!

July 6, 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of two former LEPA members and long time residents of Lac La Nonne, Doreen Hagen and Harvey Thompson. Doreen and Harvey helped to forge LEPA into the relevant and community focused organization that it is today. To those of us who knew them they will be remembered as caring and giving individuals who touched the heart of all those they met.

Update: After many decades of the $10 annual membership fee, the LEPA board has approved an increase to $20.  Following consultation with many of the members during the 2019 membership drive, there was positive feedback to increase the fees to $20 to align with current LEPA operating expenses.  Memberships can be purchased on-line at the LEPA webpage or in person from a LEPA board member.  Thank you for your continued support.
